About Android Studio

Android Studio is Google's official IDE for building Android apps, based on JetBrains' IntelliJ Platform. It covers the full Android workflow: Kotlin, Java and C/C++ code with completion and refactoring, Jetpack Compose previews, a layout editor, the Android Emulator, device streaming to test on real phones in Google's data centres, Gradle builds, profilers and tools to prepare releases for Google Play. Gemini in Android Studio is an AI assistant that generates and fixes code and answers Android questions, and newer versions add agent features. The IDE is free and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. It is effectively required for serious native Android work, though Flutter and Kotlin Multiplatform developers can use other editors for much of their code. Expect a heavy install: the SDK, emulator images and Gradle caches take many gigabytes, and builds benefit from plenty of RAM.

Best for: Anyone building native Android apps with Kotlin or Java.

Why people leave

  • Heavy on disk space and memory
  • Gradle builds can be slow on modest machines
  • Focused on Android; not a general-purpose editor
