About CodeEdit

CodeEdit is a community-built code editor that only runs on the Mac. It is written in Swift with Apple's own frameworks rather than Electron, so it starts quickly, uses little memory and looks like any other Mac app. The goal is a lightweight editor for everyday work in any language, sitting between a plain text editor and Xcode: the project says outright that it is meant to complement Xcode for work that isn't aimed at Apple platforms, not to replace it. The planned feature set includes syntax highlighting, code completion, project-wide find and replace, snippets, a terminal, task running, debugging, Git integration and extensions. Not all of that is finished: the project says it is still in development and not yet recommended for production use, and releases are pre-1.0. It is completely free under the MIT licence, funded by sponsors, and anyone can file issues or contribute on GitHub.

Best for: Mac developers who want a fast, native, free editor and don't mind beta software.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Native Swift app, so it is light on memory and feels like part of macOS
  • Free and MIT-licensed with an active open-source community
  • Familiar Xcode-like layout that is easy to pick up

Why people leave

  • Still in early development, with pre-1.0 releases and missing features
  • macOS only, with no Windows or Linux version
  • Extension ecosystem is far smaller than VS Code's
