About DocRaptor

DocRaptor is a cloud API for turning HTML into PDF, and also into Excel spreadsheets. Instead of installing a rendering engine yourself, your app sends HTML to DocRaptor and gets a PDF back, rendered by Prince, the commercial engine known for strong CSS print support. That gives you headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes and floated figures without running or licensing Prince on your own servers. There are client libraries and examples for Node, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java and .NET, and test documents with a watermark are free and unlimited while you develop. Pricing is a monthly plan based on how many documents you generate, starting with a small free plan and scaling up through paid tiers to custom enterprise pricing. The service is run by Artifex Software, the company behind Ghostscript, and it states SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance. Because it is hosted, documents leave your infrastructure, which may rule it out for some data.

Best for: Developers who want Prince-quality PDFs from an API without running a server or buying a licence.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Prince rendering quality without installing or licensing Prince
  • Unlimited free test documents while developing
  • Predictable per-document plans with simple overage pricing

Why people leave

  • Free plan allows only 5 production documents a month
  • Documents are processed on a third-party service, not on your servers
  • Costs grow with volume, unlike a self-hosted open-source engine
