About Focusmate
Focusmate is a virtual coworking service built around one-to-one body doubling. You book a 25, 50 or 75-minute slot, get paired with another member somewhere in the world, say hello and state your goal on a video call, then each of you works in silence with your camera on and checks in at the end. Sessions run around the clock, and you can favourite partners you like working with. Late arrivals and no-shows lower your timeliness score, which keeps people showing up. People use it for desk work, studying, writing, chores and exercise; it's especially popular with people who have ADHD or tend to procrastinate. It runs in the browser with its own video, so you don't need Zoom, and there's no native mobile app. The free plan allows three sessions a week; a Plus subscription gives unlimited sessions, and there are business plans for teams and communities.
Best for: Remote workers and students who get more done with someone watching, one-on-one.
Pros and cons
What works
- Free plan with three sessions a week and no card needed
- Plus is cheap compared with other coworking services
- One-to-one pairing feels more accountable than a big group room
- Sessions available 24/7 in 25, 50 and 75-minute lengths
Why people leave
- Camera must stay on for the whole session
- No native mobile app, only the website
- No host or guide; structure depends on you and your partner
