About GCompris
GCompris is a collection of more than a hundred small educational activities for young children, maintained by the KDE community and released as free software. Activities cover using a mouse and keyboard, letters and reading, counting and arithmetic, telling the time, colours and shapes, simple science like the water cycle, geography, and classic games such as chess, memory and hangman. It suits families who want a no-ads, no-account option for a shared computer, and schools: a companion GCompris-teachers app helps teachers use it in class. The software is entirely free with no paid tier, and is translated into dozens of languages, with voices and extra images downloaded as needed. Current versions run on Windows, Linux, Android and Raspberry Pi; the macOS build lags behind at an older version, and there is no iOS app because of App Store licence conflicts. The look is simple and the activities are short, so older children may outgrow it.
Best for: Parents and schools wanting a free, ad-free activity suite for kids aged 2 to 10.
