About Hidamari

Hidamari is a small open-source app that plays a video as your desktop wallpaper on Linux. You point it at a local video file, a stream URL or a web page, and it renders that behind your desktop icons and windows. It can pause playback automatically when a window is maximised or the screen is covered to save CPU and battery, mute or set the volume, and start with your session. It is written in Python by an independent developer, licensed under the GPL, and distributed mainly through Flathub, which makes it one of the simplest ways to get Wallpaper Engine-style moving backgrounds on GNOME and other Linux desktops. It only plays existing media: there is no editor, no interactive scene wallpapers and no built-in catalogue of wallpapers to browse, and behaviour can vary between desktop environments and Wayland setups.

Best for: Linux desktop users who want a looping video or web page as their wallpaper.
