About NewPipe
NewPipe is a free Android app for watching YouTube and a few other services without Google's own app or APIs. It doesn't need a Google account: subscriptions, playlists and history live on your phone, and you can import or export them. Its best-known features are background playback, a floating popup player and downloads of video, audio-only or captions in the format and resolution you pick. Besides YouTube it supports PeerTube instances, SoundCloud, Bandcamp and media.ccc.de. It's distributed through F-Droid and the project's own repository rather than the Play Store, and it's GPL-licensed and funded by donations. The trade-offs are typical of unofficial clients: when YouTube changes, playback can break until an update lands, and there are no recommendations tied to your account or iOS version.
