About Pinecone
Pinecone is a managed vector database: you store embeddings produced by an AI model and query them for the most similar items, which is the core of semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and recommendation systems. It handles indexing, scaling and replication for you, supports dense, sparse and full-text indexes for hybrid search, and adds hosted embedding and reranking models plus an assistant API for building chat-over-documents features. Because it is serverless, you do not size clusters; you pay for storage, reads and writes. A free Starter plan covers prototypes, a flat-priced Builder plan suits solo developers, and production plans carry a monthly minimum with pay-as-you-go usage above it. Enterprise customers can run it in their own cloud account. Pinecone suits teams that want vector search without running infrastructure. It is not open source and cannot be self-hosted on your own servers, which pushes some teams toward Weaviate, Qdrant or Postgres with pgvector.
Best for: Teams building RAG or semantic search who want a vector database with no infrastructure to manage.
