About Pulumi

Pulumi is an infrastructure-as-code tool that lets developers define cloud resources in ordinary programming languages, including TypeScript, Python, Go, C# and Java, as well as YAML. Because it is real code, teams can use loops, functions, packages, unit tests and their usual IDE instead of learning a dedicated configuration language. Like Terraform it previews changes before applying them and records what it created, and it can reuse many Terraform providers. The CLI and SDKs are open source under Apache-2.0 and run on macOS, Windows and Linux. State can be stored in your own bucket or in Pulumi Cloud, the company's hosted service, which adds deployments, secrets management (Pulumi ESC), policy checks, drift detection and an AI assistant called Neo. Pulumi Cloud has a free plan for one user, then paid team tiers billed by managed resources, and a self-hostable Enterprise edition. It suits software engineers who would rather write infrastructure in a language they already know.

Best for: Developers who want to write cloud infrastructure in TypeScript, Python or Go with tests and IDE support.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Uses general-purpose languages with loops, functions and tests
  • Open-source CLI with optional self-managed state
  • Free Pulumi Cloud plan for individuals

Why people leave

  • Paid team plans are billed per managed resource, which can grow fast
  • Smaller community and module ecosystem than Terraform
  • Code-based configs can become harder to review than declarative HCL
