About Roblox Studio

Roblox Studio is the free desktop editor used to make every game, or "experience", on Roblox. It combines drag-and-drop 3D world building, a script editor for Luau (Roblox's typed dialect of Lua 5.1), device emulation and playtesting, and one-click publishing to Roblox's audience on PC, mobile and consoles. Teams can edit the same place together in real time, pull free models and sounds from the Creator Store, and use built-in AI tools to generate materials or edit scripts. Studio always targets the current Roblox engine, so there is no version to pick and no export to other stores: what you make lives on Roblox. Money comes from Robux sales of in-game items, passes and subscriptions, which eligible creators can cash out through the Developer Exchange programme, with Roblox keeping a share. It suits young and first-time developers and anyone targeting Roblox's built-in player base. It runs on Windows and macOS and needs a Roblox account.

Best for: Beginners and creators who want to build multiplayer games for Roblox's existing audience.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free, with hosting, servers and multiplayer handled by Roblox
  • Built-in audience across PC, mobile and consoles
  • Real-time team editing in the same place
  • Large free asset library in the Creator Store

Why people leave

  • Games only run on Roblox; you can't publish to Steam or app stores
  • Roblox keeps a large cut of Robux sales
  • Scripting is limited to Luau and Roblox's APIs
  • No Linux version
