About Truecaller

Truecaller is a phone app that shows the name behind unknown numbers and flags or blocks calls and texts from known spammers. Its directory is built largely from its users, which is why it is strongest in countries where it is widely installed, such as India, and it also lets you look up a number by hand. Beyond caller ID, the app has grown into an all-round dialer and messaging replacement on Android, with SMS sorting, call recording and an AI assistant that can answer and screen calls for you. On iPhone, Apple's restrictions mean it works mostly through call-blocking lists and lookups rather than replacing the dialer. The core caller ID and spam blocking are free with ads. Paid Premium, Family and Gold plans remove ads, add stronger auto-blocking, the assistant, call recording, profile-view alerts and an incognito lookup mode. It suits people who get a lot of spam or calls from unknown numbers; people wary of sharing their contacts with a third-party database may prefer a lighter blocker.

Best for: People with lots of unknown or spam calls, especially in regions where Truecaller is widely used.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Very large number database gives names for many unknown callers
  • Free tier covers caller ID and basic spam blocking
  • Android app can replace the dialer and SMS inbox with spam sorting
  • Paid plans add an AI assistant that screens calls for you

Why people leave

  • The free tier shows ads
  • iPhone version is more limited than Android because of iOS restrictions
  • Its crowd-sourced directory draws on user-shared contact data, which some dislike
