About USCIS Case Status Online

Case Status Online is the free lookup tool run by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency that decides petitions and applications such as the I-130, I-140, I-485, I-765 and N-400. You type in the receipt number from your notice, a 13-character code made of three letters followed by ten digits, and the page shows the last action USCIS took on the case and, where there is one, the next step. There is no sign-in, it works on a phone as well as a computer, and you can check another receipt number straight after the first. Because it is the agency's own system, it is the reference that third-party trackers read from or point back to. That is also its limit: it answers one question about one case at a time. It sends no alerts, keeps no history you can browse, says nothing about how long similar cases took, and does not cover the consular side of the process (the National Visa Center, embassy interviews and 221(g) administrative processing), which the State Department handles in separate systems. It suits anyone who wants the official status in a few seconds and doesn't mind checking by hand.
