The short answer

Final Cut Pro suits Mac-based editors who want speed on Apple Silicon and the option of a one-time purchase. Adobe Premiere suits editors who work on Windows or in mixed teams, or depend on Creative Cloud apps like After Effects. The biggest difference is platform and pricing: Final Cut is Apple-only, Premiere is a cross-platform subscription.

Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro: our take

The two editors take different approaches to the timeline. Final Cut Pro uses a magnetic timeline that keeps clips in sync as you move them, which makes rough cutting fast but takes adjustment for anyone trained on track-based editors. Premiere uses a traditional track-based timeline, the model most editors and tutorials assume. Both handle multicam, HDR, captions and colour work, and both have added AI tools: Final Cut has Smart Conform reframing, transcript search and Magnetic Mask, while Premiere has text-based editing, object masking and Firefly generative features.

Pricing differs a lot. On the Mac, Final Cut Pro can be bought outright for $299.99 from the App Store, with free updates over the years, or used through Apple Creator Studio at $12.99/month or $129/year, which also includes Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro. Desktop Premiere is subscription only, alone or as part of Creative Cloud, with a 7-day trial. Final Cut runs only on Mac and iPad; Premiere runs on Windows and macOS, with a free mobile app.

Ecosystem is where Premiere pulls ahead. It shares projects with After Effects, Audition and Photoshop, has more third-party integrations, and is the more common format in agencies and newsrooms, so handing off projects is easier. Final Cut's companions are Apple's Motion and Compressor, and it is especially fast on Apple Silicon hardware.

Choose Final Cut Pro if you edit alone or in a Mac-only team, value performance on a Mac, and would rather pay once. Choose Premiere if you need Windows, collaborate with other Premiere editors, or rely on Adobe's other apps.

Which should you pick?

Choose Adobe Premiere if…

  • Professional editors and teams already working in Adobe Creative Cloud
  • You need Windows, which Final Cut Pro doesn't list
  • Industry-standard editor with a large talent pool and tutorials
  • Tight integration with After Effects, Audition and Photoshop

Choose Final Cut Pro if…

  • Mac-based creators and editors who want speed and a one-time purchase
  • Very fast on Apple Silicon
  • One-time Mac App Store purchase with long-term updates

About each app

What is Adobe Premiere?

Adobe Premiere, called Premiere Pro until its 2026 rebrand, is one of the most widely used professional video editors, common in YouTube channels, agencies, newsrooms and documentary work. It is a non-linear, track-based editor with multicam, colour grading, captions, motion graphics templates and audio repair, and it shares projects and assets with After Effects, Audition and Photoshop. Recent versions lean on AI: text-based editing builds rough cuts from a transcript, object masking tracks subjects, and Firefly-powered generative tools extend clips and fill gaps. Shared review links collect time-stamped feedback that shows up in the timeline. It runs on Windows and macOS, and a free Premiere mobile app for social video replaced Premiere Rush. Desktop Premiere is subscription-only, either on its own or in the Creative Cloud bundle, with a short free trial and a refund window. The subscription and Adobe's cancellation terms are the main complaints, and it is more than casual editors need.

What is Final Cut Pro?

Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional editor, known for its magnetic timeline, which keeps clips in sync as you move them, and for very fast performance on Apple Silicon Macs. It handles multicam editing, HDR, colour correction, 360-degree and spatial video, captions and background music fitting, and adds Apple's own AI features such as Smart Conform reframing, transcript search and Magnetic Mask. Motion and Compressor are companion apps for graphics and encoding. On the Mac it can still be bought outright from the App Store, with free updates over the years, and it is also included in the Apple Creator Studio subscription alongside Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro; the iPad version is subscription-based. A free trial is available. It is only for Apple devices, and its timeline model and project library structure take adjustment for editors coming from track-based editors such as Premiere, but Mac-based YouTubers and editors value its speed.
