The short answer

Pick Vim if you want a stable, light editor that is already on almost every Unix server and needs little setup for quick edits. Pick Neovim if you want to build a modern, IDE-like setup in the terminal with Lua plugins, built-in language server support and Tree-sitter. Both use the same modal editing; the main difference is Neovim's modern extension model.

Neovim or Vim: our take

Neovim began as a community fork of Vim to modernise the codebase and make it easier to extend. It keeps Vim's editing model and runs most Vimscript, so switching is mostly painless. On top, it adds Lua as a first-class configuration and plugin language, a built-in language server client for code intelligence, Tree-sitter parsing for accurate highlighting and text objects, an embedded terminal, and an RPC API that lets other tools use Neovim as their editing engine. Vim offers a persistent multi-level undo tree, its own scripting language, syntax support for hundreds of languages and formats, and terminal and graphical versions.

Both are free. Vim is released as charityware under a GPL-compatible licence, with users asked to donate to a charity helping children in Uganda; Neovim is open source. Both run on Linux, macOS and Windows, and both work well over SSH. Vim's practical advantage is availability: it is included as vi on most Unix systems and macOS, so it is often already there when you log in to a server. After Bram Moolenaar's death in 2023, a team of maintainers has continued Vim's development.

The cost of Neovim is time. Ready-made distributions such as LazyVim help, but a comfortable setup still means maintaining a config, and plugin updates can break it. Vim needs plugins and configuration for IDE features too, and many find Vimscript less pleasant to extend than Lua. Both share a steep learning curve for modal editing.

For quick edits, servers and a setup that rarely changes, Vim remains a dependable default. For developers who want language-aware completion, diagnostics and a richly customised editor without leaving the terminal, Neovim is the better base. Many people use both: Vim on servers, Neovim on their own machine.

Which should you pick?

Choose Neovim if…

  • Keyboard-driven developers who want a fast, fully customisable terminal editor
  • Very fast and works anywhere, including over SSH
  • Lua plugins, built-in LSP and Tree-sitter

Choose Vim if…

  • Anyone who edits files on servers or wants a fast, ubiquitous modal editor
  • Already installed on most Unix systems and macOS
  • Extremely fast and light

About each app

What is Neovim?

Neovim is a community fork of Vim that set out to modernise the codebase and make the editor easier to extend. It keeps Vim's editing model and runs most Vimscript, so existing Vim users can move over, but adds Lua as a first-class configuration and plugin language, a built-in language server client for code intelligence, Tree-sitter parsing for accurate highlighting and text objects, an embedded terminal and an RPC API that lets GUIs, IDEs and other tools use Neovim as their editing engine. A large plugin ecosystem, along with ready-made distributions like LazyVim, turns it into a full IDE inside a terminal. It is free and open source, runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and BSD, and works over SSH. The catch is time: a comfortable setup takes learning modal editing and maintaining a config, and things can break when plugins change. Developers who enjoy shaping their tools often stay with it for years.

What is Vim?

Vim is a highly configurable modal text editor that grew out of the Unix vi editor. Its approach of composing short commands to move and edit text is fast once learned, and it is included as vi with most Unix systems and macOS, so it is often the editor already on a server. Vim offers a persistent multi-level undo tree, a scripting language for plugins, syntax support for hundreds of languages and file formats, and terminal and graphical versions; a new GTK 4 GUI backend has recently landed. After its creator Bram Moolenaar died in 2023, a team of maintainers kept development going. Vim is free and released as charityware: its licence is GPL-compatible, and users are asked to donate to a charity helping children in Uganda. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and many other systems. Neovim has attracted many users who want Lua and built-in LSP, but Vim remains the dependable default for quick edits anywhere.
