About Conversations

Conversations is the best-known Android app for XMPP, also called Jabber, the open and federated chat standard where addresses look like user@server and anyone can run a server. It covers one-to-one and group chats, file and image sharing, voice and video calls and end-to-end encryption with OMEMO, and it is designed to use little battery without relying on Google's push notification service. You can create an account on the developer's own server for a small fee or use any free public or self-hosted XMPP server. The app is open source under the GPLv3: it is a paid download on Google Play, which funds development, and free on F-Droid. It only runs on Android; iPhone and desktop users pair it with clients such as Monal or Gajim. XMPP gives you independence, but the experience depends on the server you choose, and few mainstream contacts already have an XMPP address.

Best for: Android users who want an independent, federated messenger on open standards.
