About Digital Performer
Digital Performer, usually called DP, is the DAW from MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn), developed since the 1980s and long associated with film and TV composers. It is strong on MIDI sequencing, notation-style editing, tempo mapping to picture and chunk-based project organisation that lets you keep multiple cues or songs in one file, and it includes a large set of bundled effects and virtual instruments. Recent versions, under the DP12 name, add Dolby Atmos mixing, AI-based stem separation and track presets alongside its long-standing recording and mixing features. It pairs naturally with MOTU audio interfaces but works with any hardware. DP is sold as a perpetual licence with paid upgrades and a demo is available; it runs on macOS and Windows. Its user base is smaller and more specialised than those of Logic, Cubase or Pro Tools, so third-party tutorials and templates are less common, and its interface conventions can feel idiosyncratic to newcomers.
Best for: Film and TV composers who want deep MIDI, tempo-mapping and scoring tools.
