About FL Studio

FL Studio, made by Belgian company Image-Line and once known as FruityLoops, is one of the most popular DAWs for hip-hop, trap and electronic music. Its workflow centres on a step sequencer and pattern-based Channel Rack plus a flexible Playlist for arranging, and its piano roll is widely regarded as one of the best for programming melodies and drums. It also covers audio recording, mixing and mastering, with a set of bundled synths and effects that grows with the higher editions. Image-Line's best-known policy is lifetime free updates: buy an edition once and every future version is included, which is unusual in an industry built on paid upgrades. Editions range from the entry Fruity Edition through Producer, Signature and All Plugins, and there is a pay-monthly route that converts to ownership after 12 payments. The free trial lets you save and export projects. It runs on Windows and macOS, with a separate mobile app.

Best for: Beat makers and electronic producers who want a fast pattern workflow and never to pay for upgrades.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Lifetime free updates on every edition
  • Excellent piano roll and step sequencer for beats
  • Trial lets you save and export projects
  • Low entry price for the Fruity Edition

Why people leave

  • Fruity Edition lacks audio recording features found in higher tiers
  • Pattern workflow feels unusual to people coming from linear DAWs
  • Mixer and audio editing are less refined than studio-focused DAWs
