About Docker Desktop

Docker Desktop is the official way to run Docker on a laptop or workstation. It bundles the Docker Engine, the docker CLI, Compose, BuildKit and an optional local Kubernetes cluster, and runs them inside a lightweight virtual machine (WSL 2 on Windows) so containers behave the same as they would on a Linux server. A dashboard shows your containers, images and volumes, and extensions add tools from other vendors. Because it is the reference setup that most tutorials and company onboarding guides assume, it is the easy default for teams. The app is free for personal use, education, non-commercial open source and small businesses below Docker's size limits; larger companies need a paid per-user subscription, which also unlocks features such as Synchronized File Shares, single sign-on and Hardened Docker Desktop. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, though it uses more memory and battery than lighter Mac tools such as OrbStack.

Best for: Developers and teams who want the standard Docker setup that tutorials and company docs assume.

Pros and cons

What works

  • The reference Docker setup, so docs and tutorials match what you see
  • Built-in Kubernetes cluster you can switch on from settings
  • Same app and interface on macOS, Windows and Linux
  • Extensions add third-party tools to the dashboard

Why people leave

  • Larger companies must pay per user, even for basic use
  • Heavier on memory, CPU and battery than lighter Mac alternatives
  • Closed source, unlike Podman Desktop or Rancher Desktop
