About Podman Desktop
Podman Desktop is a free, open-source graphical app for working with containers and Kubernetes. It's built around Podman, the daemonless container engine from the Red Hat ecosystem that can run containers without root privileges, but it can also manage Docker and other engines from the same window. You can build, run and inspect containers and images, use Compose files, spin up local Kind or Minikube clusters, and deploy pods to Kubernetes; on macOS and Windows it sets up the small Linux virtual machine Podman needs for you. Extensions add features such as local AI model runners and integrations with other tools. The project is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project, and Red Hat sells a supported build for companies. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Docker compatibility is good but not perfect, so some Docker-specific tools and edge cases behave differently.
Best for: Teams that want a free Docker Desktop replacement with no commercial licence fees.
