About Fastmail

Fastmail is an independent email provider based in Melbourne, Australia, running since 1999. It offers fast web and mobile apps, calendars and contacts, and full support for open standards such as IMAP, CalDAV, CardDAV and JMAP, a protocol Fastmail helped create. Custom domains are easy to set up, and Masked Email generates a unique address per website, with a 1Password integration to create them as you sign up. You can choose EU or US data residency. There is no free plan: individual, duo, family and business plans are paid, with a free trial to start. It is not end-to-end encrypted, so Fastmail could technically access stored mail, but it does not show ads or sell data, and it works with any standard mail client. People usually move to it from Gmail for privacy and speed, and pick it over encrypted services when they want full-text search and third-party app support.

Best for: People and families who want private, ad-free email on their own domain.
