About Find Any File

Find Any File is a long-running Mac utility by Thomas Tempelmann for finding files by their directory properties: name, extension, dates, size, kind and similar. Unlike Spotlight it doesn't depend on an index, so it also finds files on network shares and external drives, inside app bundles and packages, and in system and library folders that Spotlight leaves out. A root mode, unlocked with an administrator password, can search other users' home folders too. It can also look for text inside plain-text files, zip archives and Office documents, and optionally pull in Spotlight results for things like PDF content. Results can be shown as a flat list or as a folder hierarchy with image previews, and searches can be saved and reused. It is shareware: you can download and try it from the developer's site and pay a small one-time fee if you keep using it, or buy it from the Mac App Store. It is not the best choice for searching photo metadata such as EXIF or GPS data.

Best for: Mac users who need to find files Spotlight misses, such as on NAS drives or in system folders.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Finds files on network and external volumes without an index
  • Root mode can search every folder, including other users' homes
  • Hierarchical results view makes large result sets easy to browse
  • Cheap one-time licence that doesn't expire

Why people leave

  • Mac only
  • Weak at searching image metadata such as EXIF and GPS
  • Content search in PDFs relies on Spotlight having indexed them
