About FluffyChat

FluffyChat is a volunteer-built Matrix client that aims to make the federated Matrix network as approachable as a mainstream messenger. It has a playful, uncluttered design, end-to-end encryption with encrypted message backups, voice and video calls, spaces, polls, custom stickers and moderation tools for public rooms. Because it speaks standard Matrix, you can chat with people using Element or any other Matrix client, and you can sign in to a public server or one you host yourself. The project is a non-profit funded by donations, the code is open source under the AGPL, and the app is free with no ads. It runs on Android and iPhone, in the browser, and on desktop. FluffyChat suits people who like the idea of Matrix but found Element too busy. Its small volunteer team means features and fixes can arrive more slowly, and some advanced Matrix capabilities appear in Element first.

Best for: People who want to join Matrix with a simpler, friendlier app than Element.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Clean, approachable design for Matrix
  • Works with every other Matrix client and server
  • Free, open source and ad-free

Why people leave

  • Small volunteer team, so slower development
  • Newer Matrix features often land in Element first
  • Still requires choosing a Matrix server
