About Geeqie

Geeqie is a desktop image viewer and browser that works directly on your folders, so there is no import step or separate library to maintain. It started life as GQview in 1998 and took its current name in 2007, and it is still actively developed. The app is built for quickly flicking through large sets of photos: it previews many camera RAW formats, shows histograms and pixel values, applies colour management, and can split the view into up to four panes to compare similar shots side by side. For sorting, it offers bookmarks, collections, tags and comments, and it reads and edits Exif, IPTC and XMP metadata. Images can be handed off to an external editor with a click. Geeqie is free software under the GPLv2 and runs on Linux, the BSDs and macOS (through Homebrew or MacPorts), with Flatpak, AppImage and Snap builds available. It suits photographers and Linux users who want a fast, keyboard-friendly viewer rather than a full photo manager or editor.

Best for: Linux photographers who want a fast folder-based viewer with RAW previews and metadata editing.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Works on folders directly, with no import or database step
  • Split view of up to four images for comparing shots
  • Reads and edits Exif, IPTC and XMP metadata
  • Free and open source under the GPLv2

Why people leave

  • No native Windows build; Windows use needs extra setup
  • No built-in editing beyond basic adjustments; relies on external editors
  • Interface feels dated next to newer GTK viewers
