About digiKam
digiKam is a professional-grade, open-source photo management application from the KDE community. It handles very large libraries of photos, RAW files and videos on Linux, Windows and macOS, storing metadata in a database and in standard XMP sidecars so your tags, ratings and labels stay portable. Features include face detection and recognition, duplicate finding, geolocation, advanced search, batch processing, a light editor and export to web services. It reads RAW files through the LibRaw library and supports a wide range of metadata standards. digiKam is free under the GPL and does not collect or send personal data. It is a desktop tool rather than a cloud service, so backup and phone sync are up to you, and the interface is dense, with a learning curve for people coming from Google Photos or Apple Photos.
Best for: Enthusiasts managing huge local libraries who want open formats.
