About Guitar Pro
Guitar Pro is a tab and notation editor from the French company Arobas Music, around since 1997. You write tablature and standard notation for guitar, bass, ukulele, drums, piano and more, then play it back with realistic instrument sounds, slow down or loop sections, and practise against it with a built-in metronome, tuner, chord and scale libraries. Its .gp files are a de facto exchange format for guitar tabs, and it imports PowerTab, TablEdit, MIDI and MusicXML. Guitar players, teachers and transcribers use it more than classical composers, who tend to prefer engraving-focused tools. The desktop version for Windows and macOS is a one-off licence you can install on several computers, with a 7-day free trial; mobile apps for iOS and Android are sold separately, and the companion mySongBook catalogue sells professionally transcribed tabs individually or by subscription.
Best for: Guitarists, bassists and teachers who write, transcribe or practise from tabs.
Pros and cons
What works
- The .gp format is widely shared, so lots of tabs open directly
- Strong practice tools: tempo changes, looping, metronome and tuner
- Imports and exports MusicXML, MIDI, PowerTab and audio formats
- One licence covers installs on up to 5 computers for one user
Why people leave
- Paid after a 7-day trial, with no free tier
- No Linux version
- Engraving options are thinner than in dedicated notation programs
