About TuxGuitar

TuxGuitar is a free tablature editor and player for multi-track guitar music, often used as a no-cost stand-in for Guitar Pro. You can write tabs and standard notation side by side, play them back through MIDI sounds, and open files from Guitar Pro, Power Tab Editor and TablEdit as well as MIDI. The original author stopped maintaining it around 2022, and a group of users carried development on in a new GitHub repository with a new website, releasing packages for Linux, Windows, macOS, FreeBSD and Android. It is released under the GNU LGPL and has no paid edition. It suits hobby players and Linux users who want to read and edit tabs without buying a licence; playback sound quality and polish are behind commercial tools, and current builds are not code-signed, so installers trigger operating-system warnings.

Best for: Hobby guitarists and Linux users who need a free tab editor that opens Guitar Pro files.
