About iBored
iBored is a free hex editor made for looking at disks rather than ordinary files. It reads and writes raw disk blocks in any block size, understands partition maps and file systems such as HFS, UDF and ISO 9660 through a template system, and can edit MBR and GPT partition tables. It is useful for data recovery: it copies a partially damaged disk to an image, zero-filling unreadable blocks, and keeps a journal of changed blocks so edits can be undone. It can even inspect another computer's disks over a network. Files and disk images can be dropped in too, but its author points people who mainly analyse files towards other tools. iBored is a one-person project by Thomas Tempelmann, with very little documentation and a warning that careless writes can wreck a disk, so it suits people who already know low-level disk work. Builds exist for macOS, Windows and Linux, though some features are Mac-only.
Best for: Experienced users doing data recovery or inspecting partitions and file systems at block level.
