About mIRC

mIRC is a Windows client for Internet Relay Chat that has been developed since the mid-1990s and is still updated regularly. It connects to several IRC networks at once and supports group channels and private messages, along with modern IRC features such as SSL/TLS, SASL authentication, IRCv3 extensions, IPv6, proxies, UTF-8, file transfers over DCC, notifications, logging and a dark mode that follows Windows. Its best-known feature is its own scripting language, which people use to automate chat, write bots and even build small games, and there is a large library of community scripts. mIRC is shareware: you can try it free for 30 days and then buy a licence, with separate personal and business prices. It is Windows only. It suits people who want a familiar graphical IRC client and value scripting more than a modern look.

Best for: Windows users who want a polished graphical IRC client with deep scripting.

Pros and cons

  • Supports SASL, SSL/TLS, IRCv3 and multiple servers
  • Still actively updated after three decades

Why people leave

  • Windows only
  • Paid licence after a 30-day trial, while most IRC clients are free
  • Interface looks dated next to modern chat apps
