About Neothesia

Neothesia is an open-source program that shows the notes of a MIDI file as colourful blocks falling onto an on-screen piano keyboard, the same idea Synthesia made popular. You can watch a song to learn it by eye, or plug in a MIDI keyboard and play along; if you have no keyboard, a built-in synthesizer plays the sound. It runs on Linux, Windows and macOS and is licensed under the GPL-3.0, so it costs nothing and has no paid tier. Because it works with any MIDI file, the song library is whatever you can find or create. It is lighter on teaching features than commercial apps: there are no structured courses, sheet-music lessons or long-term progress tracking, so it works best as a practice and visualisation tool, and many people also use it to make piano tutorial videos. It suits hobbyists, Linux users and anyone who wants the falling-notes approach without paying for Synthesia's unlock.

Best for: Players who want free falling-notes piano practice with their own MIDI files, especially on Linux.
