About Synthesia
Synthesia is a long-running piano practice app that displays songs as notes falling toward an on-screen keyboard, with optional sheet music. Connect a digital piano over USB or MIDI and it listens to your playing: in melody practice it waits for the correct note before moving on, and you can practise each hand separately while it plays the other. It loads standard MIDI and MusicXML files, ships with around 150 songs, and sells licensed arrangements through its own music store. Scoring and long-term progress tracking help you see improvement, and it supports keyboards with lighted keys. The download is free to try, and a one-time payment unlocks the full feature set, which sets it apart from subscription apps. It runs on Windows and Mac computers, iPad, Android tablets and compatible Chromebooks. It's best for self-taught players who like learning songs by ear and eye; it teaches less music theory than course-based apps such as Simply Piano or flowkey.
Best for: Self-taught pianists who want to learn favourite songs from MIDI files with a one-time purchase.
