About Obscura VPN
Obscura is a newer VPN built around splitting trust. Your traffic is encrypted with WireGuard all the way to an exit server run by Mullvad, but it first passes through Obscura's own relay. Obscura knows who you are but cannot read your traffic; the exit server sees where traffic goes but not who sent it. That design aims to remove the need to fully trust a single VPN company. The relay layer uses QUIC to make traffic look more like ordinary web traffic, which can help on networks that block VPNs. Accounts work with an account number, and payment is a flat monthly fee by card or Bitcoin. The macOS app runs as a sandboxed network extension, and on other platforms you can use generated WireGuard configurations or native apps. It is a young, small service, so features are limited compared with mainstream providers. It suits privacy enthusiasts who like the two-hop design and already trust Mullvad's network.
Best for: Privacy enthusiasts who want trust split across two independent operators.
