About Open Design

Open Design (written OpenDesign on its site) is a desktop workspace for making designs with AI agents. You pick a design system, describe the screens or page you want, and an agent writes a working HTML prototype into a project folder on your computer; you can then move, resize and restyle elements directly instead of regenerating. It works with coding agents you already have installed, such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, or with your own API key, and it ships with a library of open-source design systems and community skills. Teams can share prototypes as links and leave comments that are sent back to the agent as a revision. Output exports as HTML, PDF or PNG, and slide decks as PowerPoint, but there is no Figma export. The desktop app is free and open source under Apache-2.0; paid cloud plans add hosted model credits and team workspaces. It runs on macOS and Windows, with Linux only from source.

Best for: Founders and small teams who already use a coding agent and want quick on-brand prototypes they own as files.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free desktop app that works with your existing coding agent or API key
  • Projects are plain HTML files stored locally
  • Direct editing after generation, without re-prompting
  • Large library of ready-made design systems

Why people leave

  • No Figma export for handing off to traditional design teams
  • No packaged Linux build
  • Hosted cloud credits and team workspaces cost extra
