About pwvucontrol
pwvucontrol is a volume mixer for Linux desktops that use the PipeWire sound server, which most current distributions now ship. It plays the same role pavucontrol did for PulseAudio, but talks to PipeWire directly: you get a slider and mute button for every app that's playing or recording, a peak meter, a drop-down to send a single app's audio to a different output device, a choice of default device, and card profile and port selection for things like switching a headset between hi-fi and call modes. The interface is built with GTK 4 and libadwaita, so it fits in on GNOME. It's free, GPL-3.0 licensed and installed most easily from Flathub. It's a mixer only: there are no equalizer or effects controls, and it doesn't show PipeWire's node graph, so routing between apps needs a patchbay such as qpwgraph or Helvum.
Best for: Linux users on PipeWire who want a native per-app volume mixer and output switcher..
Pros and cons
What works
- Native PipeWire mixer rather than going through the PulseAudio layer
- Per-app volume, mute and output device selection
- Card profile and port switching in the same window
- Free, GPL-3.0 and available on Flathub
Why people leave
- Linux and PipeWire only
- No equalizer, effects or graph-style routing
- Smaller feature set than pavucontrol, which has had nearly two decades of work
