About rekordbox

rekordbox is the DJ app from AlphaTheta, the company behind Pioneer DJ hardware. It does two jobs: it is the standard library manager for preparing tracks, cue points and playlists to export to USB sticks for club CDJ and XDJ players, and it is a performance app for DJing from a laptop with a controller. It analyses BPM, key and phrasing, offers stems separation, effects, sampler and recording, and can sync your library through cloud storage and a mobile app. The free plan covers library management and basic DJing, while paid subscription tiers (Core, Creative and Professional) unlock performance features, hardware connection and cloud options; many Pioneer DJ controllers unlock it for free. It runs on Windows and macOS, with mobile apps for iOS and Android. It is the default for DJs who play on club Pioneer gear, but it works best with AlphaTheta hardware and the plan structure can be confusing.

Best for: DJs who play on club Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta players and need to prepare USB exports.

Pros and cons

What works

  • The standard way to prepare USB libraries for club CDJs
  • Free plan covers library management and basic DJing
  • Cloud library sync between computer and mobile
  • Unlocked by many Pioneer DJ controllers

Why people leave

  • Performance features need a subscription unless your hardware unlocks them
  • Several overlapping plans and add-ons are hard to compare
  • Best support is for AlphaTheta's own hardware
