About RStudio

RStudio is the IDE most R users learn on, made by Posit (formerly RStudio, PBC). It puts an R console, a script editor, the environment and history panes, plots, help and a file browser in one window, with features tailored to R work: code completion that understands data frames, debugging, package development tools, Git integration, R Markdown and Quarto documents with a visual editor, and Shiny app previews. It also runs Python code through reticulate, and GitHub Copilot and Posit Assistant can be enabled for AI help. RStudio Desktop is open source and free, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; the same interface can run in a browser through RStudio Server or Posit Workbench, which adds paid enterprise features like central management and authentication. RStudio is focused on R and remains the safer choice for heavy R users, while Posit's newer Positron targets mixed Python and R work.

Best for: R users, from students to statisticians, who want the standard R environment.
