About Tableau

Tableau is one of the best-known business intelligence tools. You connect it to spreadsheets, databases or cloud data warehouses, then drag fields onto a canvas to build charts, maps and dashboards that others can filter and explore. Analysts usually author in Tableau Desktop or in the browser, then publish to Tableau Cloud (the hosted service) or Tableau Server (installed on your own Windows or Linux machines) so colleagues can view and interact with the work. Tableau is owned by Salesforce and is aimed mainly at companies with dedicated data analysts, though its drag-and-drop approach is approachable for non-programmers too. Paid plans are licensed per user by role, and the full product is a sizeable investment for small teams. There is also a free route: Tableau Public lets anyone publish visualizations to a public gallery, and the free Tableau Desktop Public Edition can save workbooks locally, but anything published there is visible to everyone, so it suits portfolios and open data rather than private company figures.

Best for: Analyst teams that want polished, interactive dashboards and can budget for per-user licences.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Drag-and-drop canvas makes rich, interactive charts without code
  • Choice of hosted Tableau Cloud or self-managed Tableau Server
  • Free Tableau Public for learning and sharing public visualizations
  • Large community gallery and plenty of training material

Why people leave

  • Per-user licensing gets expensive as more people need access
  • Free Tableau Public workbooks are visible to anyone
  • Desktop authoring app has no Linux version
