About Taphouse
Taphouse is a graphical front end for Homebrew, the command-line package manager most Mac developers use. It runs the same brew binary underneath, but shows formulae and casks in a searchable window with descriptions, dependencies and disk usage, and installs or removes them with a click while showing the live log. It can start and stop Homebrew services such as Postgres or Redis, snooze updates you aren't ready for, and check installed packages against published CVEs. The paid tier adds restore points so a bad upgrade can be rolled back, release notes before updating, a health dashboard, Brewfile import and export, bulk actions and a helper that finds Intel apps still running under Rosetta. The core app is free with no account; the extras are a one-time purchase in personal and family editions, and Taphouse is also part of the Setapp subscription. It is written in SwiftUI, needs macOS 14 or later and runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It suits people who use Homebrew regularly but would rather see what's installed than remember commands.
Best for: Mac users who rely on Homebrew and want a visual way to manage updates, services and disk space.
Pros and cons
What works
- Handles both formulae and casks, plus Homebrew services
- Built-in CVE scan of installed packages
- Paid features are a one-time purchase, not a subscription
- Rollback snapshots for upgrades that break a tool
Why people leave
- Mac only and needs macOS 14 or later
- Rollback, bulk actions and Brewfile support sit behind the paid tier
- Closed source, unlike Applite or Cakebrew
