Adobe Lightroom vs Capture One
Updated October 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Adobe Lightroom
Adobe's photo organiser and RAW editor, in a cloud-synced version and the desktop-only Lightroom Classic.

Capture One
A professional RAW editor known for colour rendering and studio tethering.
The short answer
Lightroom and Capture One are both professional RAW processors with cataloguing and non-destructive editing. Lightroom is the broader choice for most photographers, with cloud sync between devices, AI masking and Denoise, and Lightroom Classic included in the same plan. Capture One is aimed at studio and commercial work, where its colour tools and tethered shooting stand out, and it offers a perpetual licence as well as subscriptions.
Adobe Lightroom or Capture One: our take
Lightroom comes in two versions on one plan: Lightroom, which stores originals in Adobe's cloud and syncs edits across desktop, web and mobile, and Lightroom Classic, which keeps the catalogue and files on your own drives. Both include AI masking for subject and sky, presets, Content-Aware and Generative Remove, Denoise and Super Resolution, and strong rating, keyword and collection tools. Capture One's reputation rests on colour: detailed camera profiles, a capable colour editor and skin-tone tools, with layers and masks for local work. Its tethered shooting, with live view and camera controls, is a particular strength, and it supports more than 550 cameras. It lets you organise in session folders or a catalogue. It has a steeper learning curve than Lightroom and a smaller plug-in ecosystem.
Lightroom is available only as a Creative Cloud membership, with a 7-day free trial; the Lightroom plan includes 1TB of cloud storage, and the mobile app is free for basic editing. If you cancel, editing is no longer fully available. Capture One offers subscriptions for desktop or desktop plus iPad and iPhone, a Studio tier for teams, and a one-time Pro licence that does not include later feature updates; subscribers also get a free perpetual licence after 5 years. Capture One is generally the more expensive option.
Lightroom runs on Windows, macOS, the web, iOS and Android; Capture One on Windows, macOS, iPad and iPhone. Pick Lightroom if you want one tool to organise and develop a large library across devices, or already use Photoshop. Pick Capture One if you shoot tethered in a studio, colour accuracy is central to your work, or you want the option to own a licence outright.

About each app
What is Adobe Lightroom?
Lightroom is where many photographers import, sort, rate and develop their RAW files. It comes in two flavours that share one plan: Lightroom, which stores originals in Adobe's cloud and syncs edits between desktop, web and mobile, and Lightroom Classic, which keeps the catalogue and files on your own drives and is still preferred by many working pros. Both offer non-destructive sliders, AI masking for subject and sky, presets, Content-Aware and Generative Remove, Denoise and Super Resolution. The trade-off is lock-in: edits live in Lightroom's catalogue, and the software is available only as a Creative Cloud subscription. The Lightroom plan includes 1TB of cloud storage, and a Photography plan bundles it with Photoshop. The mobile app for iOS and Android is free to use for basic editing, with premium features unlocked by a subscription.
What is Capture One?
Capture One is the RAW processor many commercial, fashion and product photographers use in the studio. Its reputation rests on colour: detailed camera profiles, a capable colour editor and skin-tone tools, plus layers and masks for local adjustments. Tethered shooting, where the camera sends each frame straight to the computer, is a particular strength, with live view and camera controls. You can organise work in sessions folders or a Lightroom-style catalogue. It is pricier and less beginner-friendly than consumer editors, and its plug-in ecosystem is smaller than Adobe's. Capture One offers subscriptions for desktop, for desktop plus iPad and iPhone, and a Studio tier for high-volume teams, alongside a one-time-purchase Pro licence that does not include later feature updates. There is a free trial. The desktop app runs on Windows and macOS, and the mobile app on iPad and iPhone.
