GitHub Actions

GitHub's built-in CI/CD and automation, with workflows defined in YAML and a large marketplace.

The short answer

Pick GitHub Actions if your code is on GitHub and you want CI/CD built into the repository with no extra account. Pick CircleCI if build speed and test insight matter most, or your repositories are spread across GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. The biggest difference is focus: Actions is a convenient part of GitHub, while CircleCI is a dedicated CI service with more machine types and tools for large test suites.

CircleCI or GitHub Actions: our take

Both define pipelines in YAML and can run jobs on hosted machines or your own self-hosted runners. GitHub Actions is built into GitHub: workflows live in the repository, react to repository events, and integrate secrets, permissions and pull request checks without setup. Its marketplace of reusable actions makes simple pipelines quick to assemble. CircleCI is a separate service that connects to GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Its reusable config packages are called orbs, and it offers Docker, Linux, Windows, macOS, Arm and GPU machines in many sizes, plus dependency and Docker layer caching, test splitting by timing, flaky test detection and SSH access into failed jobs.

Pricing models differ. GitHub Actions is free on public repositories and self-hosted runners; private repositories get 2,000 minutes a month on the Free plan and 3,000 on Team, then pay per minute, starting at $0.006 for Linux. CircleCI uses credits consumed per minute according to machine size. Its free plan offers up to 6,000 build minutes a month for up to 5 active users, and the Performance plan starts at $15/month with 30,000 credits included. Credit pricing gives more control over machine size but takes effort to predict.

In practice, the trade-off is convenience against speed and visibility. Actions needs nothing new, but its hosted runners are slower than specialist providers and large workflows get hard to debug. CircleCI means another tool and account, and its configuration can grow complex with orbs and anchors, but it often runs faster and gives a clearer picture of which tests are slow or flaky.

Small teams and open-source projects on GitHub are usually well served by Actions. Teams with long test suites, a need for macOS or GPU machines in many sizes, or code across several hosts will often get more out of CircleCI.

Which should you pick?

Choose CircleCI if…

  • Teams with large test suites that want faster builds and better insight than built-in CI
  • You need to host it on your own servers
  • Wide choice of machine types including macOS and GPU
  • Test splitting, caching and insights for speed

Choose GitHub Actions if…

  • Teams hosting code on GitHub who want CI/CD right next to their repositories
  • No separate tool to set up for GitHub repos
  • Large marketplace of reusable actions

About each app

What is CircleCI?

CircleCI is one of the leading dedicated CI/CD services. Pipelines are defined in a YAML config with reusable packages called orbs, and run on Docker, Linux, Windows, macOS, Arm and GPU machines in many sizes, or on your own self-hosted runners. Features like dependency and Docker layer caching, parallel test splitting by timing, test insights, flaky test detection and SSH into failed jobs help large teams keep builds fast and debuggable. It works with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket repositories. Pricing is usage-based with credits consumed per minute depending on machine size: a free plan includes a generous monthly allowance for a few users, and paid Performance plans start at a low monthly fee with extra users and credits, while Scale plans and a self-hosted CircleCI Server serve enterprises. Compared with GitHub Actions it needs a separate tool and account, but often runs faster and gives better insight into test suites.

What is GitHub Actions?

GitHub Actions is the CI/CD and automation service built into GitHub repositories. Workflows are YAML files in the repo that run on events such as pushes, pull requests, releases, schedules or manual triggers, executing jobs on GitHub-hosted Linux, Windows and macOS runners or on your own self-hosted runners. Thousands of reusable actions in the Marketplace handle common steps like setting up languages, caching dependencies, publishing packages and deploying to clouds, which makes simple pipelines quick to assemble. Because it lives next to the code, permissions, secrets and pull request checks are integrated without extra setup. The limits show on large or complex pipelines: debugging YAML, slow hosted runners and per-minute costs on private repos lead many teams to faster third-party runners or dedicated CI services. Usage is free on public repositories with standard runners and on self-hosted runners; private repositories get a monthly minute allowance by plan, then per-minute billing.
