About Buildkite

Buildkite takes a hybrid approach to CI. Its hosted service handles the dashboard, pipeline orchestration, test analytics and integrations, while builds run on Buildkite agents you install on your own machines, cloud instances or Kubernetes, so source code and secrets never have to leave your environment and you can use any hardware. Hosted Linux and Mac agents are also available for teams that don't want to manage compute. Dynamic pipelines can generate steps at runtime from scripts, which large monorepos use to run only what changed, and the agent scales to very high concurrency, which is why companies with huge build volumes often pick it. Test Engine adds flaky test detection and test splitting, and Package Registries host artifacts. Pricing is per active user with a free plan for small teams, a Pro plan and Enterprise contracts, plus usage charges for hosted agents; there is a 30-day all-access trial.

Best for: Engineering teams with large build volumes who want builds on their own infrastructure.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Builds run on your own machines, keeping code private
  • Scales to very high concurrency
  • Dynamic pipelines suit large monorepos

Why people leave

  • You manage the agent infrastructure unless you pay for hosted agents
  • Per-user pricing adds up for big orgs
  • More setup than all-hosted CI
