The short answer

Google Photos and iCloud Photos are the default photo backups for most phone owners. Google Photos has the stronger search and editing and works on both Android and iPhone, which makes it the better fit for mixed households. iCloud Photos is the natural choice for people fully on Apple devices, keeping full-resolution originals in sync everywhere and offering optional end-to-end encryption, but it has no Android app.

Google Photos or iCloud Photos: our take

Google Photos' standout feature is search: you can type a person, place, pet, document or object and it usually finds the photo, and AI features let you ask questions about your library. Editing ranges from quick fixes to Magic Editor on supported devices, and it builds albums, collages and memories on its own. iCloud Photos syncs the entire Photos library, including edits, albums and deletions, across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and iCloud.com, keeping originals at full resolution in their original formats, including RAW and ProRAW. Its search, people recognition and Memories run largely on the device.

Storage and privacy differ. Google gives 15 GB free, shared with Gmail and Drive, and both Original and Storage saver uploads count against it; Google One plans go up to 5 TB. Apple offers just 5 GB free, with more through iCloud+. Google Photos is not end-to-end encrypted and is analysed by Google's systems, while iCloud Photos can be end-to-end encrypted with Advanced Data Protection. Both can be slow to leave: Google relies on Takeout, and bulk export from iCloud is slow.

For sharing, Google offers shared albums and partner sharing. Apple's iCloud Shared Photo Library pools photos with up to five other people, and Shared Albums can reach non-Apple users through web links. iCloud has a Windows app but nothing for Android.

Choose iCloud Photos if everyone in your household uses Apple devices and you value full-resolution originals and encryption. Choose Google Photos if you use Android, mix platforms, or want the best automatic search and organisation and are comfortable with Google analysing your library.

About each app

What is Google Photos?

Google Photos backs up pictures and videos from phones and computers into your Google account and organises them automatically. Its search is the standout: you can type a place, a person, a pet, a document or a thing in the picture and it usually finds it, and recent AI features let you ask questions about your library in plain language. Built-in editing covers quick fixes up to generative tools such as Magic Editor on supported devices, and it creates albums, collages, highlight videos and memories on its own. Shared albums and partner sharing make it easy to swap photos with family. Storage is shared with Gmail and Drive, so once the free allowance runs out you pay for a Google One plan. Apps run on Android, iOS and the web, and it is preinstalled on most Android phones. The downsides are privacy and lock-in: photos are not end-to-end encrypted and are analysed by Google's systems.

What is iCloud Photos?

iCloud Photos stores your full Photos library in iCloud and keeps it in sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and iCloud.com. Originals are kept at full resolution in their original formats, including RAW and ProRAW, while Optimize Storage keeps smaller versions on devices that are short on space. Edits, albums and deletions sync everywhere. An iCloud Shared Photo Library lets up to six people pool photos into one collection, and Shared Albums work even with people outside Apple's ecosystem through web links. Search, people recognition and Memories run largely on the device. Storage comes from iCloud+, which starts with a small free allowance that most people outgrow quickly. With Advanced Data Protection turned on, photos are end-to-end encrypted. On Windows there is an iCloud app; there is no Android app, so it is a poor fit for mixed households.
