Kahoot!
Game-based quiz platform for live and self-paced quizzes in classrooms, training and events.

Mentimeter
Interactive presentation tool for live polls, quizzes, word clouds and Q&A.
The short answer
Kahoot! is a competitive quiz game with points, music and a live leaderboard, built for checking what people learned. Mentimeter is an interactive presentation tool for polls, word clouds, rankings and Q&A, built for gathering audience input. Pick Kahoot! for classroom and training quizzes; pick Mentimeter for workshops, lectures and meetings where opinions and questions matter more than scores.
Kahoot! or Mentimeter: our take
Both tools let an audience respond from their own phones, but the experience is different. Kahoot! runs like a game show: players join with a game PIN, link or QR code, answer against the clock and climb a leaderboard. Quizzes can also be assigned as self-paced challenges with a deadline, and there is a large library of ready-made kahoots. Mentimeter builds a presentation in which slides are live polls, word clouds, quizzes, scales or open questions, with results shown in real time and optionally anonymously. It works alongside PowerPoint, Google Slides, Teams and Zoom, and its Menti Creator AI drafts sessions from a prompt.
Free plans differ in what they limit. Kahoot! offers a free account with no credit card for basic hosting, participant limits grow with the plan, and standard live sessions support up to 2,000 players; many question types, AI-generated quizzes and reports need a paid plan, and its plan families for schools, home and business can be confusing. Mentimeter's free plan is capped at 50 participants per month, which is tight for larger groups, while the Basic plan removes the participant limit. Kahoot! runs in the browser and on iOS and Android; Mentimeter runs in the browser.
The weaknesses mirror each other. Kahoot! is weak for open-ended Q&A and discussion, while Mentimeter is not a full slide design tool and keeps several useful features behind paid plans.
Teachers and trainers who want energy, competition and quick learning checks will get more from Kahoot!, especially with its library and self-paced assignments. Facilitators, lecturers and meeting hosts who want honest feedback, anonymous questions and word clouds inside a talk will find Mentimeter a better fit.

About each app
What is Kahoot!?
Kahoot! turns quizzes into a game show. A host puts multiple-choice and other question types on a shared screen, players join on their own devices with a game PIN, link or QR code, and points for speed and accuracy feed a live leaderboard with music. Quizzes can also be assigned as self-paced challenges with a deadline. Teachers can pick from a large library of ready-made kahoots or create their own, and paid plans add more question types such as polls, puzzles and word clouds, AI-generated quizzes, team mode, presentation slides and detailed reports. Kahoot! has separate plans for schools, for individuals and families, and for businesses under the Kahoot! 360 name, with participant limits that grow with the plan up to a few thousand live players. A free account covers basic hosting. It runs in the browser with iOS and Android apps. It is built for engagement and learning checks, not for open-ended meeting Q&A.
What is Mentimeter?
Mentimeter builds presentations around audience participation. Slides can be live polls, word clouds, quizzes, rankings, scales or open questions, and people respond from their phones using a code, with results appearing on screen in real time and anonymously if you choose. It is widely used in classrooms, lectures, workshops, all-hands meetings and conferences, and it can import existing slides or work alongside PowerPoint, Google Slides, Teams and Zoom. An AI feature, Menti Creator, drafts interactive presentations from a prompt, and AI grouping helps sort open-ended answers. A free plan lets you try it with a monthly participant cap, while paid plans for individuals, education and teams remove limits and add features like branding and exporting results. It runs in the browser. It's not a replacement for a full slide design tool, and the participant limits on the free plan are tight for larger groups.
