The short answer

Midjourney is a hosted service that produces polished, stylised images with very little prompt work, but it has no free plan and no public API. Stable Diffusion is a family of open-weight models you download and run yourself, free for most individuals and small businesses. Pick Midjourney for quick, attractive results; pick Stable Diffusion for control, privacy, fine-tuning and offline use.

Midjourney or Stable Diffusion (Stability AI): our take

Midjourney is one product: you type a prompt on its website or Discord server, get a grid of images, then upscale, vary, pan, zoom or edit them. Its painterly, cinematic house style is why many artists use it for concept art and mood boards. Style references, personalisation, an edit model for inpainting and outpainting, and shared folders round it out. Stable Diffusion is not an app at all. You download the weights, currently centred on Stable Diffusion 3.5 with older SDXL and 1.5 models still popular, and run them in a front end such as ComfyUI, Automatic1111, SwarmUI or Draw Things, or call Stability AI's API.

The cost models are opposite. Midjourney is subscription-only, with plans that differ mainly in fast GPU time, relaxed generation and stealth mode. Stable Diffusion's core models are free under the Stability AI Community License for research, non-commercial use and commercial use by people and organisations under $1M in annual revenue; above that, an enterprise licence is required. The licence is not an OSI open-source licence. The hidden cost of Stable Diffusion is hardware: you need a capable GPU and some patience with setup.

Privacy and control also differ. Midjourney images made outside stealth mode can appear in its public Explore feed, and it runs only in the browser. Stable Diffusion runs fully offline on your own machine, and its ecosystem of community fine-tunes and LoRAs lets you train a specific style, character or product. Base Stable Diffusion models generally trail the best hosted models on out-of-the-box quality, though fine-tunes narrow that gap.

Designers who want striking images quickly and don't mind a subscription should choose Midjourney. Tinkerers, developers building image generation into products, and anyone who needs private or custom-trained models should choose Stable Diffusion.

  • You need Self-hosted, which Midjourney doesn't list

About each app

What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an independent research lab's image model and the app built around it. You type a prompt on the website (or in its Discord server) and get a grid of images back, then upscale, vary, pan, zoom or edit them. Its house style leans painterly and cinematic, and many artists and designers pick it for mood boards, concept art and illustration because results look finished with little prompt work. Newer versions add an edit model for inpainting and outpainting, style references, personalisation and shared folders for collaboration. There is no free plan: access is sold through monthly or yearly subscriptions that differ mainly in fast GPU time, relaxed generation and stealth (private) mode. Images made outside stealth mode can appear in the public Explore feed. It runs in the browser only, with no official public API, which limits it for developers who want to build it into their own products.

What is Stable Diffusion (Stability AI)?

Stable Diffusion is the family of open-weight image models from Stability AI, and the foundation of a huge ecosystem of community fine-tunes, LoRAs and local apps. Current releases centre on Stable Diffusion 3.5 in Large, Turbo and Medium sizes, while older SDXL and 1.5 models remain popular because so many community add-ons target them. You don't use it through one app: you download the weights and run them in a front end such as ComfyUI, Automatic1111, SwarmUI or Draw Things, or call Stability's API. The Stability AI Community License makes the core models free for research, non-commercial use and commercial use by people and organisations under $1M in annual revenue; larger companies need an enterprise licence. Stability itself now focuses mainly on enterprise customers. It suits tinkerers and teams that want models they can run, fine-tune and keep private.
