The short answer

MindNode suits Apple-only users who want a calm, simple mind mapping app; Xmind suits anyone who needs Windows, Linux, Android or web access and more diagram types. The biggest difference is platform reach: MindNode runs only on Apple devices, while Xmind runs almost everywhere and packs in far more features.

MindNode or Xmind: our take

MindNode, made by the small independent company IdeasOnCanvas, is known for an uncluttered design: start with a central idea, add branches by keyboard or touch, and the layout tidies itself. It runs natively on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro and Apple Watch, and syncs through your own iCloud, where data is stored encrypted. Xmind runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web, and offers many structures beyond the mind map, including logic charts, org charts, timelines, fishbone diagrams and matrices, along with an outliner, ZEN mode, a Pitch mode for presentations and Xmind AI.

Both use a free tier plus subscription. MindNode's free version covers basic mind mapping, import and export; MindNode Plus costs $2.99/month or $24.99/year and adds outlining, themes, images, notes and tasks, focus mode, collaboration and Apple Watch support. It is also included in Setapp. Xmind's free plan covers essentials with limits on history, slides and AI credits, and its paid tiers are US$4.92 per month for Pro and US$8.25 per month for Premium, adding unlimited sheets, Gantt views, collaboration and more AI.

The trade-off is simplicity against breadth. MindNode is easier to pick up and feels at home on Apple hardware, but it is light on team features and useless to colleagues on Windows or Android. Xmind does more and fits mixed teams, though it has more to learn and its plans change fairly often.

Choose MindNode if you work entirely on Apple devices and want a focused personal tool, especially if you already pay for Setapp. Choose Xmind if you use other platforms, share maps with people outside the Apple ecosystem, or need charts and presentation features beyond basic mind maps.

Which should you pick?

Choose MindNode if…

  • Apple users who want a simple, good-looking personal mind mapping app
  • Very clean and easy to use
  • Native on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro and Watch

Choose Xmind if…

  • Individuals who want a polished mind mapping app on every device
  • You need Windows, Linux, Android and Web, which MindNode doesn't list
  • Runs on desktop, mobile and the web, including Linux
  • Many structures beyond basic mind maps

About each app

What is MindNode?

MindNode is a mind mapping app built only for Apple devices by IdeasOnCanvas, a small independent company. It is known for a calm, uncluttered design: you start with a central idea, add branches with the keyboard or touch, and the layout stays tidy automatically. The current version runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch, syncs through your own iCloud with data stored encrypted there, and uses Apple Intelligence features on supported devices. Basic mind mapping, import and export are free. A MindNode Plus subscription, monthly or yearly, adds outlining, themes and styling, images and stickers, notes and tasks, focus mode, collaboration and Apple Watch support, and it is also included in Setapp. The previous version, MindNode Classic, is still supported for subscribers. There is no Windows, Android or web version, so it suits Apple-only users rather than mixed teams.

What is Xmind?

Xmind is one of the best-known mind mapping apps, available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web. Beyond classic mind maps it offers logic charts, org charts, tree tables, timelines, fishbone diagrams and matrices, plus an outliner view, a distraction-free ZEN mode and a Pitch mode that turns a map into a slide presentation. Recent versions add real-time collaboration and Xmind AI, which can expand branches, summarise and generate maps from prompts using a credit allowance. The free tier covers the essentials with limits on version history, slides and AI credits; paid Pro and Premium subscriptions, billed per user, unlock unlimited sheets, Gantt views, collaboration and more AI. Maps are stored as files you own as well as in the cloud. Xmind is polished and good value, but the plan structure changes fairly often, and team administration features are less mature than in tools built for companies.
