About Agent TARS

Agent TARS is an open-source AI agent stack from ByteDance that tries to finish tasks the way a person would, by looking at the screen and using a browser, the terminal and connected tools. It ships as a command-line tool with a web interface, installed through npm, and can run headless on a server. A hybrid browser agent controls pages through visual GUI recognition, the DOM or both, and the core is built on the Model Context Protocol, so you can attach MCP servers for extra tools. The same repository hosts UI-TARS Desktop, a native app for Windows and macOS that controls your local computer or a remote computer or browser with mouse and keyboard actions, driven by ByteDance's UI-TARS and Seed vision models. The software is free under the Apache 2.0 licence, but you supply a model: an API key for providers such as Volcengine or Anthropic, or your own UI-TARS deployment. It is aimed at developers and tinkerers rather than people wanting a polished consumer assistant.

Best for: Developers who want to experiment with open-source browser and computer-use agents on their own models.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and open source under Apache 2.0
  • Works with several model providers or a self-deployed UI-TARS model
  • MCP support for plugging in extra tools
  • Controls browsers by vision, DOM or a mix of both

Why people leave

  • You pay for or host the model yourself
  • CLI setup needs Node.js 22 or newer
  • Two related projects in one repo can be confusing to start with
