About Bochs
Bochs is a long-running open-source emulator that recreates an entire x86 PC in software: the processor, common hardware devices, memory and a BIOS. It can be built to imitate CPUs from the 386 through modern x86-64 chips, and it runs guest systems such as Linux, DOS and Windows. Because every instruction is emulated rather than passed to the host CPU, it is much slower than a hypervisor like VirtualBox or VMware, but it is portable and very precise, which is why operating-system developers and students use it with its built-in debugger to step through boot code and kernels. It is free under the LGPL, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and is configured through text files rather than a polished GUI. The project is still maintained, with releases continuing in 2026 and source code hosted on GitHub. Pick it for OS development, hardware research or retro experiments, not for running a fast everyday VM.
Best for: OS developers and students who need a precise, debuggable x86 PC emulator.
Pros and cons
What works
- Emulates the whole PC in software, so it runs on almost any host
- Built-in debugger is handy for kernel and bootloader work
- Can model many x86 CPU generations, from 386 to x86-64
- Free, open source and still actively released
Why people leave
- Far slower than hypervisors because nothing runs on the host CPU directly
- Configured mostly through text files, with a dated interface
- Device models are incomplete, so some guest hardware misbehaves
