About Docusaurus

Docusaurus is an open-source static site generator built by Meta's open source team for documentation websites. You write pages and blog posts in Markdown or MDX, which lets you drop React components into a page, and Docusaurus builds a fast single-page site with plain HTML generated for every route so search engines can index it. It comes with the features docs sites usually end up building by hand: versioned docs that track project releases, translations, sidebars, dark mode, and search through Algolia or community plugins. Layouts can be customised by writing React components or swapping theme parts. It is used by many large open-source projects, including React Native and Redux. Docusaurus is free under the MIT licence; you run it locally with Node.js and host the output anywhere static files are served, such as GitHub Pages, Netlify or your own server. There is no hosted editor, so writers need to be comfortable with Git and Markdown.

Best for: Developer teams that want a free, Git-based docs site with versioning and translations built in..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and MIT-licensed, with no hosting lock-in
  • Docs versioning and i18n work out of the box
  • MDX lets pages embed live React components

Why people leave

  • No visual editor; contributors need Git and Markdown
  • Customising beyond the theme requires React knowledge
  • Built-in search depends on Algolia or a third-party plugin
