About Galene

Galene is a small, open-source videoconference server written in Go, created at a French university for lectures and meetings. It is designed to be easy to install and cheap to run: it uses little CPU, can run on modest hardware or even Windows, and its developer estimates it can serve about 300 participants per core for lecture-style sessions. Users join through a web client in desktop or mobile browsers, with screen and window sharing, chat, recording, background blur, activity detection, peer-to-peer file transfer and moderation tools such as muting, kicking and locking groups. There is also an Android client and SDKs for building other clients. Galene is free software under the MIT licence, and you host it yourself, manually or through YunoHost and some Linux distributions. Note that it does not do end-to-end encryption, so the server operator could in principle access media. It suits universities, small organisations and hobbyists who want a simple, efficient meeting server.

Best for: Universities and tinkerers who want a light, simple self-hosted meeting server.
