About GG (Gadu-Gadu)

GG is the Polish instant messenger that started life as Gadu-Gadu around the turn of the millennium and is still one of the best-known chat apps in Poland. It covers the usual messenger basics: one-to-one and group chats, a contact list, emoji and stickers, plus photo sharing without recompression and file transfers of up to a few gigabytes that can also be sent to people who don't use GG. Alongside chatting with friends it leans on meeting new people, with a random-chat feature and an option to talk to strangers. Clients exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and there's a web version that needs no installation. The app is free with ads; a GG Premium subscription removes the ads, lifts limits on invitations and chats with strangers, and adds an AI assistant. The interface and support are in Polish, which makes it a natural pick for Polish speakers and a poor one for everyone else. The same company also runs GGapp, a separate messenger aimed at businesses and public offices.

Best for: Polish speakers whose friends and family still use GG, or who want to meet new people in Polish.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Native apps on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus a web version
  • Large file transfers with a share link that works for people without GG
  • Sends photos without shrinking their resolution
  • Free to use, with Premium only needed to drop ads and limits

Why people leave

  • Interface, help and community are almost entirely in Polish
  • Free version shows ads
  • No end-to-end encryption advertised, unlike Signal or WhatsApp
  • Most of its user base is in Poland, so few contacts abroad will be on it
