About GNOME Console
GNOME Console, sometimes called kgx, is a deliberately simple terminal emulator for the GNOME desktop. It replaced GNOME Terminal as the default in upstream GNOME and focuses on being approachable: tabs with an overview grid, automatic light and dark styles that follow the system, a header bar that changes colour when you run commands as root or over SSH, notifications when long commands finish, and very few preferences. It is built with GTK 4 and libadwaita on top of the VTE terminal library, so it shares rendering and behaviour with other GNOME terminals. Console is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 and is available on Flathub as well as in distributions. Its minimalism is the point, but power users often find it too limited, since it lacks profiles, split panes and detailed keyboard or appearance settings.
Best for: GNOME users who want a clean terminal that just works.
